Onil is one of those small little towns that are nestled into the mountains of the Costa Blanca that almost disappears from the radar when it comes to tourism. Like many other towns in these mountains, the charming form of tourism that is on offer is quite different from the package tour destinations that are so popular in the Costa Blanca. Many people just want to fly into Spain, into the province of Alicante, and not have to do very much. They don’t want to drive too far, they don’t want to really see any of the surrounding countryside, they don’t really want to mix with the local very much, they basically want to relax in the sun, have cheap food and wine, and go home revitalized and ready for the next six months or year of working.
But when you come to a place like Onil you will realize that this is the true form of relaxation. Onil is a town with a population of about 6 1/2 thousand. It nestles into the foothills of the Sierra de Mariola and has a very rugged terrain. But it is particularly beautiful because of this ruggedness, even a small visit here will show you that the population of this town and others like it are so very welcoming when it comes to anyone who takes an interest in where they live.
There are different ways of seeing this town. You can either stay in Onil for the entirety of your vacation, in which case you are going to use the place as a base for your excursions, whilst uncovering the many activities that are available in the area, and just to base yourself well you undertake your travels around the mountains or down to the coast. Or, you can visit Onil as part of an excursion while you are staying in one of the other villagers in the mountains, or perhaps down in one of the cities. Either way, you should try to spend as much time as you can just walking around this beautiful town. If you want to see the real parts of Spain then here you have it.
