How many times has your child asked for a new expensive toy, and you’ve said no? It happens in our family all time time. There are many reasons why:
1) We can’t afford it.
2) Why spend tons of money if the child will only use the toy for a year or two?
3) Used is just as good as new.
4) What if the child loses interest quickly?
That’s why we’ve started buying used toys, and getting more bang for our buck. Some used toys either have very little wear and tear, or they just manage to survive the test of time. Dolls are a great example. Most of the time they end up sitting on shelves or in drawers or boxes. After many years, they’ll still be free of dirt or imperfections.
While house and garage sales allow you to get up close and view the merchandise, you’re missing out on the whole online world. There is an incredible world of used toys on eBay. People clear our their playrooms after their children grow up, and they sell the toys in lots. In many cases, they do not consult with the children, and have no idea of the value of the toys that they are selling. Mom is just interested in cleaning out the house!
While eBay is an excellent place to look for used toys, it does have its drawbacks. The searching mechanism is fairly simple, and there are not that many categories for specific toys. Some new websites provide a front-end for eBay auctions and allow better searching for a specific toy. An example would be PollyAuctions.com. This is a website dedicated to finding Polly Pocket dolls, playsets, and accessories. The website has categories for lots, vehicle types, and famous playsets and doll series. PollyAuctions.com also has a few retail listings, so you can compare the prices between retail and auction. You will be pleasantly surprised to see the savings you can get when buying a lot of dolls and playsets. We recently bought a lot for our daughter which contained dolls, cars, and a couple playsets - all in excellent condition, and even after shipping, we calculated savings of over 80 percent!
Of course, the consumer should always check if there are recalls on any specific toys. Many sellers do not check and state that the buyer is responsible for checking before they bid.
