Planning an outdoor party or big barbeque this summer? Not sure where to start? Follow these tips to make sure your party is a great success.1. People tend do too much food, but be careful not to under estimate – guests are likely to eat less in hot weather, but may drink more, so remember to include plenty of soft drinks and water, as well as beers, wine and ciders.2. If children are to be invited, there should be plenty for them to do to keep them occupied. This way they won’t nag the grown ups, and can have their own party! Perhaps some of the adults or the older children could take it in turns to supervise or watch over the younger ones if necessary. Remember that an afternoon of fizzy drinks and running around may catch up with the children!3. Keep the guests, especially children, away from the barbeque – it’s dangerous and will be hot for a long time after it has been put out. Care should be taken when food is being served, and being carried about.4. Ensure that food is prepared and cooked properly and that salads are washed, before serving – nobody wants to get food poisoning, and nobody wants to be responsible for making their friends ill.5. Keep drinks cool outside by storing them in buckets of cold water if there is not enough room in the fridge. Or alternatively, use a dedicated fridge outdoors for drinks and food that needs to be kept cold. Nobody wants a warm beer or cider, or a glass of white wine at room temperature! Having plenty of ice cubes for soft drinks is also a good idea. 6. It’s easy to forget to reapply sun tan lotion whilst gossiping and having a good time, but try and remember to apply as per the instructions on the bottle. Nobody wants to remember the party as the one where they got badly burnt.7. Allow your guests to bring food if they offer, and keep a record of who’s bringing what so that dishes aren’t duplicated. This will take some of the pressure off you, so you can concentrate on other aspects of throwing the best party ever. 8. Shop around for the best value provisions. Will your guests mind if you decide to use paper plates and plastic cutlery? Will anybody really moan about the brand of wine you have chosen or the fact that your barbeque isn’t the latest, gigantic gas powered behemoth? 9. Being able to relax at your own party is vital, and so having everything prepared in advance is highly recommended.10. Enjoy yourselves and have a good time! People want to be able to talk to you, so don’t spend all the time tending to the barbeque, and being the perfect host. By allowing and encouraging your guests to get their own food and drinks, you should be able to enjoy spending time with your friends. These tips should help your summer party to be a real success, and who knows, you might even make a habit of it!
