How to Buy a Great Present for Your Husband

January 18th, 2010

In a world of hustle and bustle, it can be hard to find the right gift, even for the one closest to you. It is tempting for many just to go out and get a gift card, but the old saying it’s the thought that counts is not entirely true. Sure, everybody likes money, but there is something special about getting that perfect gift, whether it was the latest tech gadget, you had your eye on or something completely out of the blue.

The key to picking the right gift is thought. It takes time to think through the options, to research and search. A great gift idea usually doesn’t pop in your head immediately. That means a great gift starts early: Last minute gifts usually aren’t great because the thought just wasn’t there. Pay attention to what he asks for, any hints, or complaints. Look for a gift opportunity. It can be something he specifically requested, something to solve a problem, a unique keepsake from the heart, or just plain cool.

Interest-related gifts are usually the easiest to pick out, but it depends on the person. What does your husband like to do in his free time? Does he play golf, work on his laptop, or fix up his classic Mustang? Once you have his interests pegged, you need to do some investigating. Listen in, ask others and use your head to figure out some gift ideas. Don’t settle on just one, make a list.

Maybe he takes his laptop on the road and could use a portable printer and scanner to manage documents. Be creative! After you have a good list going first make sure, he doesn’t already have it. Once you know you’re safe from the duplicate gift catastrophe, research the options. With the internet, it’s easy, just type it into a search and look at the reviews.

Keepsake gifts are from the heart. Their value is far greater than the amount they were purchased at. In fact, it may or may not be something you can even buy in a store. Sometimes a keepsake gift can also be an interest gift, sometimes it isn’t. Maybe your husband is a musician and you have a local luthier build him a custom acoustic guitar. Perhaps he’d like a book with text and photos to memorialize a significant event or achievement.

Lastly, cool gifts are those out of the blue grand slams! It could be a palm pilot for the person who has trouble keeping organized, or a GPS system for the car. Heck it can even be that portable printer and scanner mentioned earlier for the traveler. Tech gifts are cool but it doesn’t have to be tech-related.
