How To Start A Window Cleaning Business

January 15th, 2010

To many the thought of cleaning windows as a business opportunity seems absurd. Yet it is possible for someone with no experience and very little to invest to make the same level of income as a moderately successful lawyer or accountant. It is important to have drive and determination and almost essential that you recruit a reliable assistant in order to achieve efficiency in the business.

Although a dedicated van with flashy lettering is desirable, the business can be started with your own car and fitted with a roof rack. The major investment is going to be a suitable set of ladders, but it may be possible to start with some that you or a family member already own.

There is nothing like washing your own house’s windows and those of your neighbors as a favor to get up to speed! After three or four houses you will be pretty quick and ready to train an assistant to help you. This is possibly the hardest part of getting the most from this small business opportunity. You will need the assistant to refresh buckets of water from houses where the occupants are at home, as well as running round some of the ground floor windows while you are busy up the ladder. You need to be sure that the helper is working to a high standard and for this reason you will need to check their work frequently until you are able to trust them fully. Offering a performance incentive is a great way to ensure they are working well and not to be too mean with the level of their pay.

The next step is to drive round the populated areas and drop leaflets giving your mobile telephone number and the price you will charge. A good idea is to have a card made that allows you to fill in a price you think suitable for a particular house and which also includes instructions to leave it showing in the window on a day that you intend cleaning in their area. You might also consider knocking on any doors where a house looks like it needs its windows cleaning – so long as the residence looks well kept otherwise!

With an assistant you could easily clean up to 150 average houses a week. depending on your location you will be charging anything between £10($15) and £20($30) per visit indicating that this business can earn cash amounting to a six figure turnover annually. Of course you will have wages to pay and the cost of running you vehicle.
