Fiberglass Pools – Advantages and Disadvantages

January 16th, 2010

A fiberglass swimming pool offers many distinct advantages over other types of swimming pools. However, this does not mean that fiberglass inground swimming pools are necessarily your best option. You need to remember that their are advantages and disadvantages to every pool type, and the one that fits you best will be determined by 1) what you want in the pool, and 2) your geographic location.

Reasons why you would choose a fiberglass pools

You would decide to purchase and install a fiberglass type swimming pool for the following reasons:

1) These types of pools are quick and easy to install. How it works is that your pool contractor will excavate where the pool is going to go, set up the piping and pump system, then they will bring the pool pre-made to your home. The fact that the pool is pre-made makes it so your pool can be installed withing a few days to a week, versus normal installation times of several weeks/months for a concrete poured pool.

2) The fiberglass gives a very smooth finish to the surface of the pool. This is very nice, especially if you have little children who do not like to scrape their knees and hands on the pool edge and floor.

3) Long-term maintenance can be less with this type of pool. Cleaning this pool is easier, as the surface is not porous and deflects the growth of algae and mold much better than other types of swim pools. This allows you to use less chemicals and save time over the life of your pool.

4) They are also very durable. Fiberglass is a very strong material, up to 17 times stronger than the old-fashioned concrete they used to use in building pools. In addition, when slight cracking happens it doesn’t always hurt the main integrity of the pool, keeping repair costs (for minor repairs) down.
