At some point after you’ve been in an auto accident, you will have to deal with an insurance adjuster. The adjuster is the person at the insurance company who will take your case and determine how much money to offer you and how much work will be put into your case. If you want to make your case as strong as possible, you should know how these adjusters arrive at the auto accident settlement amounts they come up with and what they’re compensated to do.

First, insurance adjusters deal with cases like yours on a daily basis as part of their job, so most likely they know the ins and outs of your case. They are compensated by the insurance company to try to save the company as much money as possible and get you to settle for the least amount possible without projecting a bad image if at all possible. They’ve been trained by their companies to do this.

However, unlike other professions, like hedge fund employees, who are paid bonuses based on how much money they make, adjusters don’t usually get paid based on the amount of money they save the company. This, combined with the fact that they money isn’t theirs, makes them generally fairly easy to deal with if you have all your paperwork in order and aren’t asking for ridiculous sums in compensation.

So, how can you use this information to your advantage? Know that most insurance adjusters will lowball you because that’s what they’re paid to do, but while there’s always a few bad apples, they most likely won’t give you an incredibly unfair amount. They’re also just people doing their jobs, so if you negotiate with them fairly, they’ll do the same to you. And finally, if you have the right documentations and good reasons behind you and enough persistence, you will most likely get the settlement amount that you want as long as it’s not going to make them look bad at their job.
